Item: Knife Rings

We were driving along after the last feeding along the top of Lake Baringo when we spotted a blanket clad young man with a hat - a delightful traditional sight. Of course we had to stop to give him a ride as there are very few vehicles along that road.  Speaking no English, we worked at communication.  I spotted the Finger knife. As the last fellow we ordered them from never produced, we began a conversation about making them for us.

We stopped for the next young man as well.  He of course knew the first and we all began talking about the possibility of a little business together.

The second fellow had a phone and spoke some English so he would be the delivery person.  He was the second in his family. When asked if he completed school he said no, the other two boys completed school but there was not enough money for him to go to school. When asked if he liked his traditional life he smiled and said an unequivocal YES.  He is married with children. He lost many of his cows and goats during the drought but there is always the hope of rain.

The young men's names are Kukat and Kanyakera from Chesenmyon Village.

The finger knives are typical of the Pokot and have a myriad of uses.  Worn as a ring is ever handy. They are made from a variety of metal items but the most common recycled item are nails.

These come in size S, M, L
