Item: 8" Soapstone Thinker
Soapstone is quarried in a small town called Tabaka near Kisii, Kenya. The natural stone is soft and varies in color from pure white, cream, and rose to a charcoal gray. After the stone is quarried, it is rough carved into a variety of designs, shapes or household utensils. Occasionally the rough cutter will continue on to finish the stone but often the rough cuts are sold to other soapstone finishers who take them back to their stalls and work the item to finish.
The Thinker is a common figurine among soapstone carvers. The black thinker is dyed black before polishing. As each is carved individually, each is approximately 7 1/2 - 8 1/2" tall and may vary slightly in thickness.
