Item: Soapstone Lion
Soapstone is mined in Tabaka, Kisii, Kenya. The stone ranges in color from a creamy white to a rose. After the stone is quarried, it is rough cut into various shapes with African animals, one of the favorites. The rough cut pieces are purchased by stone finishers, who carry the pieces to their sale stalls and work on them. The piece is smoothed with water and sandpaper. It may be finished as natural stone or as in this case, dyed fading mahogany. Fading mahogany is a popular color. Initially the piece is a deep red. As the dye ages it also fades. Over time the color fades to an auburn brown patterned by the grain of the stone beneath. Polish is applied to bring a high sheen.
This lion measures 4" long and 21/2" wide.
