Item: Soapstone Hippo
Soapstone is mined in Tabaka, Kisii, Kenya. The stone ranges in color from a creamy white to a rose. After the stoneis quarried, it is rough cut into various shapes with African animals, one of the favorites. The rough cut pieces are purchased by stone finishers, who carry the pieces to their sale stalls and work on them for sale. The piece is smoothed with water and sandpaper. It may be finished as natural stone or as in this case, dyed ebon black. Polish is then applied to bring a high sheen.
This Hippo measures 2" tall and 3-4" long.
