Item: Soapstone Mice![]() Sweet as can be, these small 2.5" soapstone mice are small enough to carry with you all day. They don't eat much and can amuse you at work or play.
Richard Juma's crafts have become quite widely spread within Kenya, and beyond. His carvings go all the way from Nakuru, where he is currently based, to Nairobi and Mombassa, where his friends in the Kenyan craft network sell them. Through Aina Moja, Richard's work has also become known in North America. Richard says he takes pride in the knowledge that his crafts could be sitting on somebody's coffee table or mantle halfway across the world. Soapstone is mined in Tabaka, Kisii, Kenya. The stone ranges in color from a creamy white to a rose. The rough cut pieces are purchased and carved by stone finishers, who carry the pieces to their sale stalls and work on them for sale. The piece is smoothed with water and sandpaper. It may be finished as natural stone or as in this case, dyed ebony black or mahogany. Polish is then applied to bring a high sheen.
