Item: Mesh and Bead Earrings Tucked into the outskirts of Nairobi is a wonderful Social Purpose Enterprise. Jacaranda Workshops creates beautiful jewelry primarily using brass and clay. This is not so surprising except the artisans at this workshop are mentally handicapped. Often in Kenya this group is outcast and marginalized; left to begging and relatives for their livelihood. But at Jacaranda over 40 mentally handicapped individuals are given love, respect, and work. They are paid a piecework wage, given lunch and extra assistance when needed. The individuals are selected from the Jacaranda School for the Handicapped graduates. Jacaranda Workshops is not a residential facility. Most of the artists live with their aging parents or relatives.
The jewelry process is broken into many small steps. Twisted, pounded, and shaped the pieces are collected and assembled into earrings.
Teardrop shape measures 1 1/2" across with a 2 1/2" drop.
