It is a seasoned 3 1/2" x 6" coal burned wooden container.  The braided leather handle is firmly attached to the sides.  a leather lid fits on the top. 

Made for use and well used, this container comes complete with remants of its contents on the leather, the odor of its usual contents, wood ash and milk, the leather it was made from and a bit of its previous owner. It is beautiful with a well worn patina and still very serviceable with no holes. A wonderful museum or collection piece.
