This is an authentic Samburu Drinking Container from Kenya. It ws purchased by Aina Moja in Wamba, Kenya during an artist search journey.  While we were waiting for a blacksmith known as "the big man with the big voice", Augustus Lebyare, many of the locals brought items from their homes.  Two elderly women brought their well used drinking containers. This is one of them.    It is a seasoned 9" leather covered wooden container.  The 5" wooden lid fits an inch into the leather neck of the container, making the entire container height 13".

A well worn leather harness wraps around the bottom of the container with long straps some of which still extend from the harness and are used to hold the container to the blanket wrap when walking or hang from the pole rafters when at home. 

Made for use and well used, this container comes complete with the odor of its usual contents, wood ash and milk, the leather it was made from and a bit of its previous owner. It is beautiful with a well worn patina and still very serviceable with no holes. A wonderful museum or collection piece.
