Item: 10" Soapstone Maasai Plate
Soapstone is quarried in Tabaka, Kisii, Kenya. The stone is rough cut into various items. Soapstone finishers like Charles Ombesa purchase the rough stone articles and finish them for sale. Charles first smooths the rough plate, then hand paints the design. When the paint is dry, he uses a small knofe to etch the details and reveal the natural stone beneath. The entire plate is then polished to a sheen.
This 10" plate depicts two Maasai in their traditional clothing. The reverse side is painted in a mottled pattern.
