Item: 10" Raise Rhino Plate

Soapstone is quarried in Tabaka, Kisii, Kenya. The stone is rough cut into various items. Soapstone finishers like Charles Ombesa purchase the rough stone articles and finish them for sale. Charles first smooths the rough plate, then hand paints the design. When the paint is dry, he uses a small knife to etch the details and reveal the natural stone beneath. The entire plate is then polished to a sheen.

This 10" plate has a raised pattern of the Rhinos and depicts two Rhinos who cannot make up their minds on which way to go. "This way, no that way". The reverse side is painted in a mottled pattern.
