Soapstone is quarried in Tabaka, Kenya.  It is chipped from the quarry by hand and carried to the roadside where it is purchased by carvers.  These carvers will rough cut a variety of items for sale to the finishers.  The finishers travel to Tabaka and pruchase the rough cut designs and carry them back to their workshops to finish the carving.  After the carving is finished they will dye the stone, paint designs and etch in the stone.  When satisfied, they will polish the piece to a high scheen. Though some basic designs are repeated, each is unique.

This pumpkin dish is approximately 2" deep and 4 1/2" in diameter.  Its uses are as broad as your imagination.
