Soapstone is quarried in Tabaka, Kenya.  It is chipped from the quarry by hand and carried to the roadside where it is purchased by carvers.  These carvers will rough cut a variety of items for sale to the finishers.  The finishers travel to Tabaka and pruchase the rough cut designs and carry them back to their workshops to finish the carving.  After the carving is finished they will dye the stone, paint designs and etch in the stone.  When satisfied, they will polish the piece to a high sheen.

This box was finished by Lily Kiegan.  It is not only a soapstone box but a bit of a puzzle.  A Kenya shaped peg is cut out of the top.  The peg is removed and box lid slides on a soapstone guide (take care, this can break) to open.  To reclose the box, reverse the process. Slide the cover on and replace the peg.  

This box is 1 3/4" tall, 5 1/2" long and 3 1/2" - 4" wide.
