Lily Kiegan travels to Kisii, Kenya to purchase rough cut soapstone. She then travels back to her home on the equator and finishes the soapstone items. First the items are softened in water and smoothed with a knife and sandpaper.  When the item is dry it is painted with the desired design, then a small knife or fingernail file is used to etch so the natural stone color comes through to accent the design. The entire piece is then waxed and polished. 

This square container is finished with her unique color and animal designs.  The Water Buffalo is visible in the image, on the reverse side is the image of a lion. Acacia trees complete the design.

This container is approximately 2 1/4" square and 4" tall.
