Item: ChukiYaChaki

This is an amazing unique piece of Shipibo Indian textile art from Peru. It was made by Anita.  Anita lives in Yurinachocha, a small port on an Oxbow lake of the Ucayali River.

It has 100% cotton base.  Hand dyed with natural dyes in brown and black.  The traditional Shipibo designs outline a story center. Shipibo design is a mixture of geometric patterns. Although the meaning of the designs has been lost, anthropologists theorize that the designs could be a form of language, or that they represent the twisting rivers and canals.

This is a story of a confrontations between two mythical characters. One of the figures is the Chukiyachaki. It is a mythical figure that the Shipibos beleive lives in the jungle. It is a very short human like creature with one deer foot.  It is a the trickster of the jungle. It can transform into people you know, make paths that weren't there and lead you into the jungle.  Soon you are lost. Occasionally it has been known to steal women and try marry them. It will also steal food from loggers in the jungle.

The other figure is the spirit of the banana.  Traditionally the Shipibo beleive that all plants have spirits. These spirits can take human form and have intelligence.

In this story, the Chukiyachaki stole Yucca from the spirit of the banana and is making Masato, a fermented brew.  The spirit of the banana is saying, " Why did you steal my Yucca.

The resolution to the conflict is up to you.

All the design is hand embroidered using a large variety of stitches.

This piece of artwork begs to be framed and given a prominent place in your collection.  It measures 29 1/2" x 29"
