Item: Shipibo Embroidery Art

Shipbos are well known for their beautiful intricate embroidery. This work is hand done with needle and thread usually expressing a story and design that has age old significance. Although the meaning of the designs has been lost, anthropologists theorize that the designs could be a form of language, or that they represent the twisting rivers and canals.

This piece is hand embroidered on 100% hand spun, hand woven Peruvian cotton. The labor intensive method of cotton weaving gives a durable open weave fabric. Several types of stitches are used to create the design. This piece is hemmed on two sides and has the end of weave selvage edge on two sides.
