Item: 7" Ceramic Bowl

Anita is a Shipibo Indian. She lives in the small port of Yurina Cocha near Pulcallpa, Peru. Shipibo pottery is a mixture of geometric patterns. Although the meaning of the designs has been lost, anthropologists theorize that the designs could be a form of language, or that they represent the twisting rivers and canals. The Shipibo design seems to be a communal art as one woman could stop her work and another could continue with no distruption in the pattern.

Each piece is hand made beginning with the coil start, no pottery wheel is used. The designs are hand drawn then the pieces are "fired" on an open fire.

This bowl measures 7" in diameter at the top and 2 1/2" high. It tapers to a smaller bottom. The bottom of the bowl has a "surprise" Anita creates a small pocket at the bottom of the bowl and places bits of seeds and pottery inside. The bowl then has a distinctive rattle
