The Naya Waserona Women’s Group is a newly formed group of Shipibo artisans from the Yarinacocha area of Peru.

SEED BEAD NECKLACES and BRACELETS

One of the crafts is the creation of seed bead necklaces.  A variety of seeds are collected from the trees in this Amazon River Basin.   The women are careful not to harvest more than is sustainable.

These seeds and other discarded items such as fish scales and bones are used to create lovely bracelets and necklaces.

HAND MADE POTTERY

Shipibo pottery is the work of women.  The artist individually hand crafts each piece without a potter’s wheel, using the coil method to mold the local clay into many useful cups, bowls, plates and pots.

Shipibo geometric patterns are drawn on the pottery and a sap is used as a glaze.

After drying in the sun, the pottery is fired by placing it in the center of a large outdoor fire.

HAND PAINTED DESIGN

HAND EMBROIDERED TEXTILES

The Shipibo are well known for their work with textiles. Small hand looms make belts, and straps. Larger looms make textiles ready to embroider into unique wall art, or stitch into shirts, skirts, and bags.

Shipibo design is a mixture of geometric patterns. Although the meaning of the designs has been lost, anthropologists theorize that the designs could be a form of language, or that they represent the twisting rivers and canals.  The Shipibo design is a communal art as one woman could stop her work and another could continue with no disruption in the pattern.
